Chelsea are now set to submit a bid for Ivan Fresneda – although the Blues face competition from Barcelona for the Real Valladolid defender.

That is according to SPORT in Spain.

So, what is the situation involving Ivan Fresneda and Chelsea? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the Spanish news outlet believe Chelsea are now set to make an offer for the 18-year-old, who is actually learning how to speak English, according to AS.

Real Valladolid value the teenager at a sum of €15m (£13m) – and are happy to accept an initial €10m (£9m) upfront with a further €5m (£4m) in additional payments.

Fresneda is said to be eager to take the next step in his career after weeks of waiting, as Barcelona initially expressed a desire to sign him, only for things to go somewhat cold – despite the fact he wants to join Xavi at the Camp Nou.

Deco – Director of Football at Barcelona – is believed to be personally very keen on signing the Spaniard, and recently made a bid which was rejected by Real Valladolid.

Now, Chelsea could hijack the deal for the Real Valladolid No.27 – who has been called a “marvellous” talent.

SPORT believe the Blues are convinced that Fresneda can become an important player at Stamford Bridge, although Mauricio Pochettino will have to try and make the right-back forget about his desire to join Barcelona.

Chelsea do not need Ivan Fresneda

In our view, Chelsea have no need for Fresneda.

The Spain Under-19 international is a right-back, and that area of Pochettino’s squad is already quite bloated.

Chelsea have Reece James and Malo Gusto to choose from in the right-back department.

With no European football on the schedule at Stamford Bridge next season, two right-backs are more than enough for Pochettino to deal with the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

If Chelsea do – however – plan to push on with a move for Fresneda, it would make sense to send him on loan to Todd Boehly’s Strasbourg first, where he can continue his development.
