Dean Jones revealed that Chelsea had originally planned to send Kenedy out on loan again before they embedded him into Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

Speaking on the Football Terrace, Jones said it was in the Blues’ initial thinking to ship off the Brazilian immediately after they cut his loan spell with Flamengo short.

However, it appears Kenedy will actually be staying put for the time being.

He also recently had his name officially added to Chelsea’s league squad, although without a number.

Not winning with the wing-backs

His premature return from Flamengo reflects the current situation involving Tuchel’s wing-backs.

Or rather, Tuchel’s lack of wing-backs.

In response to Reece James and Ben Chilwell’s injuries, the Stamford Bridge powers have been searching the market for possible solutions.

One of these avenues has led them to try and lure Emerson Palmieri away from Lyon, the player they let go over the summer.

Lyon are unwilling to relinquish one of the better performers, plus Emerson has recently tested positive for covid, meaning he won’t be moving anywhere for at least a week.

Kenedy here to stay

Chelsea have tried and succeeded with this same tactic in reintroducing Kenedy to fold.

Yet, unlike with Emerson, their stance on the versatile defender has seemingly changed.

“I’ve seen that Kenedy’s just been now put into the first-team squad. The idea when he first came back was that he was just looking for a new loan club,” explained Jones.

Chelsea had probably anticipated making a new signing, or retrieving Emerson, before settling upon Kenedy as the alternative choice.

He certainly wouldn’t be everyone’s first pick, considering his last appearance for the Blues was in 2018.

However, the teenager they signed over half a decade ago has matured and moulded into a much sturdier player.

Right now, Tuchel cannot be fussy over who he can and cannot call upon.

Kendy is a living and breathing answer to part of his problems, so it would be wise to treat him like one.
