Marcos Alonso’s future at Chelsea is likely to be over if the club sign reported summer target Ben Chilwell from Leicester City.
The Telegraph reports that Frank Lampard’s side are interested in a move for the Leicester left-back in the summer transfer window.
The report explains that full-back Alonso would “almost certainly” leave if Chilwell does move to Stamford Bridge.
Chilwell, 22, has come through the academy at Leicester and grown into a key player at the King Power Stadium in recent seasons.
The rapid defender is blessed with extreme pace that makes him a real threat with his overlapping attacking runs, but he’s also improved his game defensively and is part of a solid backline under Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers.
He has already earned nine senior England caps and has everything you could want in a modern day full-back.
Chilwell has already scored one goal and managed three assists in his opening nine appearances this season, while he should only keep getting better.
There is no doubt that he would be an upgrade on Alonso for next season and he could then battle it out with Emerson Palmieri for the left-back position at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso has been a successful player during his time with the Blues, but unfortunately he’s a weak link defensively and it looks like this would be a good time for it to be his last season.
The 28-year-old is far more comfortable in a wing-back role and that’s not something Lampard is deploying too often, so cashing in on him to make room for Chilwell would make perfect sense.
