Chelsea set Trevoh Chalobah asking price and it’s a fair one, but Cesc Fabregas has a problem

Trevoh Chalobah continues to be linked with a Chelsea exit this summer as Xabi Alonso looks to sort out the multitude of options at centre-back – and the Blues have now set an asking price.

When Axel Disasi and Aaron Anselmino return to Cobham after loan spells away from Chelsea, Alonso will have a whopping 10 centre-backs to choose from. That’s even before Palace’s Maxence Lacroix is signed.

Chelsea have supposedly entered talks with Palace to land Lacroix after making the France World Cup star their no.1 centre-back target this summer. It is believed Chelsea are willing to pay as much as £50m.

Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Mamadou Sarr, and Chalobah have all been linked with new clubs as the summer window starts to heat up. Cesc Fabregas wants to sign Chalobah, but there is a problem.

Chelsea slap a reasonable price tag on Trevoh Chalobah’s head

According to Italian reporter Alfredo Pedulla, Chelsea are set to request a €30m (£26m) fee plus bonuses for Chalobah. Of course, any sale of Chalobah would be pure profit in terms of Financial Fair Play.

But Pedulla believes that to be an issue for Fabregas and Como, who are preparing to compete in the Champions League next season. Due to Financial Fair Play, Fabregas’ Como budget has been restricted.

Pedulla describes trying to afford Chalobah’s fee as ‘not exactly a walk in the park’. Beyond the June 30th deadline, Como may have a better picture of what they can afford – but Chelsea’s price tag is a fair one.

While he may have had a tricky season – as most Chelsea players have – Chalobah is an England defender, yet to reach his peak and in the World Cup squad. He has two years left on his Chelsea deal, currently.

Not only that, but Chelsea also have the option of extending that by a further year. A year ago, Chelsea would have certainly requested a bigger fee for Chalobah. Little over £25m seems rather reasonable.

Trevoh Chalobah’s stance on move to Cesc Fabregas’ Como

Chalobah has come under increasing criticism for his performances at centre-back. Used rotationally under Enzo Maresca in the first half of the season, Chalobah was first choice with Liam Rosenior in charge.

But the return of Levi Colwill, the form of Jorrel Hato, the potential signing of Lacroix, and Chelsea making Josh Acheampong ‘untouchable’ have pushed Chalobah down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

Without European football, game time will be limited, and BBC Sport understandably say that Chalobah is keen on a move to Italy and Como. Whether Fabregas’ men can afford Chalobah is another question.
