Chelsea transfer new: Newcastle tipped as favourites to sign Mason Mount

Journalist Ben Jacobs has tipped that Newcastle United could be the favourites to sign Mason Mount this summer, with Chelsea playmaker expected to leave west London.

Speaking to TeamTalk, the CBS Sport reporter revealed that the England international fits the profile for what Eddie Howe is looking to sign this summer, with the Newcastle manager keen to bring in an attack-minded midfielder with the ability to play numerous roles, such as Mount.

The Cobham academy graduate has been heavily tipped for a move away from Chelsea after a dismal season under Graham Potter, with Mount no closer to signing a new contract at the club despite months of talks. And there’s now a chance that Newcastle could land the midfielder.

Jacobs said on the Magpies’ interest in signing Mount: “The brief at Newcastle is forward-thinking, creative and multi-purpose players. And I think that mount Pulisic, Maddison and Mount all fall into that category. So I think that should Mount leave Chelsea, which is not given, then Newcastle will also be one to watch.”

Indeed, Newcastle are primed to open their wallets this summer for the first time in a big way since being taken over by Saudi Arabia’s PIF in 2021, and a deal to sign Mount would be very possible for the northeast Premier League side, especially if Chelsea fail to qualify for Europe.

Moreover, with Mount unwilling to sign a new contract with Chelsea, the Magpies could be in the perfect position to offer the England international a new start, with the 24-year-old the ideal player to make a name for himself at St. James Park after falling out of favour at the Blues.

Newcastle signing Mount could be a massive result for all parties

Mount’s time at Chelsea seems to be coming to an end this season, yet whilst the majority of supporters will be sad to see one of their own leave, there’s no denying that a move could be exactly what the midfielder needs to get his career back on track, and Newcastle could be perfect.

The Magpies have shown under Howe that they can bring the best out of players, especially out of those who previously looked like lost causes, and for Mount, a move to the northeast might be ideal in getting the England international back to loving his football and dominating the Premier League on a regular basis.
