Chelsea are once again interested in signing RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol, according to reports.

According to The Times, the Blues have ‘renewed their interest’ in the 21-year-old defender.

It is explained that Chelsea held discussions last summer over a move for Gvardiol, with co-owner Todd Boehly deciding that the £70million asking price was too high.

However, the report says Graham Potter’s side are ready to chase the Croatian centre-back’s signature this summer.

In addition, there’s a £97million release clause in Gvardiol’s contract with Leipzig that doesn’t become active until 2024. Therefore, Chelsea will try negotiate a lower price sooner.

Gvardiol reportedly wants to play in the Premier League during his career, but will that be in Chelsea colours at Stamford Bridge?

Described as “very special” by Pat Nevin, Gvardiol’s reputation has soared during the last year.

The left-footed centre-back was exquisite at the World Cup a few months ago for Croatia, who finished third at the major international tournament.

He’s currently enjoying an impressive season in Germany for Leipzig, too.

In our view, Gvardiol would be a really exciting signing for any of the top sides across Europe.

However, the centre-back position isn’t one that Chelsea need to be prioritising going into the summer window.

There’s some talented young centre-halves on the books at Stamford Bridge, with the likes of Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile. The striker department looks threadbare right now, though.
