Chelsea could sign a new goalkeeper this summer, with neither Robert Sanchez nor Filip Jorgensen convincing last season.

Jorgensen is now expected to leave Chelsea, though it is not quite clear what will happen with Sanchez.

In terms of who could come in, according to the Daily Mirror, Chelsea are interested in Porto’s £51m-rated Diogo Costa.

Robert Sanchez can’t compete with Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa

Costa had a phenomenal season with Porto, both individually and collectively. He helped his club to win the Portuguese league title and put up some very good numbers.

For example, Costa conceded just 15 goals in 33 games. He also kept 21 clean sheets and had a save percentage of 80.6%, according to FBref.

In contrast, Sanchez had a very disappointing campaign with Chelsea. The Blues finished 10th in the Premier League, missed out on Champions League qualification as a result and failed to win a trophy, while Sanchez also made some mistakes between the sticks.

In total, he conceded 49 goals in 35 outings and only kept nine clean sheets. His save percentage was significantly lower than Costa’s, with the Spaniard saving just 67.6% of shots he faced.

Of course, Costa was playing in a much more dominant side competing in a weaker division, but his numbers are still quite impressive.

Who would you prefer to see in goal next season, Diogo Costa or Robert Sanchez?

Chelsea could still go into the new season with Sanchez as their No.1. Mike Penders could deputise for him, with the Belgian expected to get a chance in the first team.

However, many Chelsea fans would like to see a new shot-stopper come in to replace Sanchez, and Costa could be a great option.

The decision will likely come down to new manager Xabi Alonso. Based on what has been reported about how much input the 44-year-old is going to get at Stamford Bridge, if he asks for a new goalkeeper, he should get one.
