Chelsea's first major summer signing is a question of when not if, says Di Marzio
Romelu Lukaku has already clarified to Inter Milan that he would like to join Chelsea this summer, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.
It is no longer a question of “if” but “when”, the Italian transfer expert claims about Lukaku’s Chelsea switch.
The 28-year-old has now expressed his desire to join Chelsea, having unfinished business at the London club.
An earlier report from Belgian outlet HLN suggests Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has played an important role in convincing the striker.
Di Marzio further added that the decision is purely sporting and not money-related.
The journalist highlighted how Lukaku even turned down an offer from Manchester City in the last months due to his loyalty to Inter.
But the situation has now changed. Antonio Conte has left the club, and so has Achraf Hakimi as Inter’s financial crisis put their Serie A title defence campaign at risk.
Chelsea and Inter will still have to reach an agreement over the transfer fee, obviously. But the latter has reportedly begun looking for potential replacements, including Atalanta’s Duvan Zapata.
According to Sky Italia (via Sky Sports), Chelsea will soon table an improved bid, between of £94million to £102m, after Inter’s previously turning down their second offer of £85m bid.
