Chelsea’s pursuit of Pep Chavarria could be about to land them in hot water

Rayo Vallecano appear to be far from happy with Chelsea’s pursuit of their defender Pep Chavarria.

Chelsea are in the market for a new left-back after selling Marc Cucurella to Rayo’s city rivals Real Madrid.

They have reportedly had a bid rejected for Chavarria but do not seem ready to give up on the 28-year-old just yet. However, things could be about to get ugly between the Blues and Chavarria’s current employers.

Who would you start in a five-man defence for Chelsea?

Rayo Vallecano considering reporting Chelsea to FIFA after Pep Chavarria bid

Xabi Alonso is pushing for Chavarria and it has been claimed that the Spaniard has now agreed personal terms with Chelsea. Clearly, though, Rayo are not happy about that.

According to COPE, Rayo are considering reporting Chelsea to FIFA and are not currently in any negotiations with the Blues about a deal for Chavarria.

While this is proving to be a tricky transfer for Chelsea, they were at least able to sign Marco Palestra from Atalanta on Wednesday.

Palestra is a right-back but can also operate at left-back, so he could play on his opposite flank at times next season, especially if Chelsea fail to sign Chavarria.

Chelsea are confident that Palestra can make an immediate impact following his arrival from Italy.

Pep Chavarria not worth the trouble

Chavarria certainly ticks some boxes for Chelsea. He is 28 so would add some much-needed experience to this youthful Chelsea side.

Last season, Chavarria also had quite a good game against Crystal Palace in the Conference League final, proving that he can go up against Premier League opposition.

Do you want to see Pep Chavarria, Marco Palestra or Jorrel Hato at left-back next season?

At the same time, he is probably not an individual worth drama involving FIFA. Chavarria could perhaps do a job for Chelsea next term, but he is not exactly a spectacular full-back.

After Cucurella’s sale, the Blues do need a new left-back. Jorrel Hato cannot play every game and is arguably a better centre-back anyway. Chavarria could be that left-back, but only if Rayo’s stance softens a little bit.
