Not everyone at Chelsea seems to be on board with the idea of bringing Brentford striker Ivan Toney to Stamford Bridge.

Ivan Toney is a player who Chelsea are looking at ahead of the January transfer window.

However, journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed on Substack that some in Chelsea’s senior leadership are not convinced that Toney is actually the right choice for the club.

Jacobs also says that Brentford could demand as much as £80m for the 27-year-old, making a January deal “difficult” for Todd Boehly and Co.

He is still yet to play a game this season because of his ban.

Chelsea should not have doubts about Ivan Toney

Toney has proven that he can score goals in the Premier League, netting 20 times in 33 appearances last term.

Of course, it is his only outstanding season in the English top flight so far, while he is missing so much football right now. There could be a lot of rust by the time the former Peterborough man is ready to play again.

However, Toney has the profile of an archetype Premier League forward, which is a good sign.

During the 2022/23 campaign, he won 3.3 aerial duels per game, which was the third-highest average in Thomas Frank’s squad (WhoScored).

The England international is quite a physical player; he should give Chelsea confidence.

It is just starting to look like there may be a bit of hesitancy to fork out on him in January, though, and that hesitancy could increase if Nicolas Jackson continues to perform.

The 22-year-old is Chelsea’s current first-choice striker and has really come to life over the Blues’ last two games.

Jackson scored in the 4-4 draw with Manchester City and grabbed himself a hat-trick in the 4-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur prior to the recent thriller at Stamford Bridge.
