Crouch shares one signing Chelsea need to make so they can compete for PL, it's not Haaland
Peter Crouch believed buying a centre-back would help Chelsea challenge Manchester City for the Premier League next season, writing for the Daily Mail.
Thomas Tuchel has already proved his worth against the champions elect, having defeated Pep Guardiola twice since he became Blues manager in January.
Three could be the magic number if Chelsea can overcome City in this year’s Champions League final.
Win on the 29th of May and Tuchel’s team should be considered as serious contenders for domestic glory.
RONALDO NEEDS TO STOP WHINING.
Crouch felt another commanding presence in defence would take the Blues to City’s level.
“If Chelsea can get a top-class central defender, one out of the highest bracket, that would put them in with a huge chance next season,” said the former Liverpool striker.
“Thomas Tuchel took over a really good squad but it is still behind City at the minute, for all the progress they have made.”
Transfer time
A lot of Chelsea’s transfer attention has been on signing another name in attack.
Erling Haaland, Sergio Aguero, Romelu Lukaku, Robert Lewandowski, and Harry Kane have all been mentioned.
However, bringing in another central defender is also on the agenda.
The Athletic reported last month that interest surrounding Bayern Munich’s Niklas Sule had intensified.
Other names under discussion are Jose Gimenez from Atletico Madrid and Jules Kounde of Sevilla.
Chelsea’s central defender dilemma
Chelsea still have plenty of their own centre-half loose ends that need tying up.
Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger, and Cesar Azpilicueta are all entering into the final 12 months of their contracts.
Thiago Silva is yet to sign an extension to keep him on for another term.
A decision over the future of Fikayo Tomori is yet to be made, whilst Marc Guehi could link up with the first team after his loan spell with Swansea City.
But Chelsea only have to admire the impact of Ruben Dias at City to understand how influential a new figure at the back can be.
