Darren Bent insists Chelsea’s 24-year-old would not start for Arsenal or Manchester United

Darren Bent believes Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount would only play for two out of this season’s top-six Premier League clubs if he were to leave Chelsea.

There is uncertainty over Mount’s future at Stamford Bridge at the moment amid a stand-off in contract talks between him and Chelsea.

The 24-year-old’s deal expires in 2024, but reports suggest Chelsea would rather sell him than allow him to enter the final year of his contract without committing to a new deal.

In Friday’s press conference, Chelsea manager Graham Potter said he had already talked “a bit” with Mount over the situation but, eventually, the club and the player will have to make the decision.

The midfielder has been linked with overseas clubs, including Juventus, but staying in the Premier League would likely make more sense for the midfielder if he were to leave Chelsea.

Bent believes Mount would have two options if he wanted to play regularly.

“Absolutely not,” Bent told talkSPORT when asked if Mount would start for Arsenal’s current side.

“[Manchester City?] No. [Manchester United?] if everyone’s fit, no.

“[Spurs?] Yes, but that’s a non-starter. He’s not going to Spurs.

“[At Liverpool], he will be very close. That’s probably the closest…

“Newcastle, potentially yes. I’m surprised Newcastle aren’t heavily in for him because he’d be perfect for them.

“If you’re going to the next level, he’s exactly what you’re looking for.

“He’s young, an English international, he’s played in big, big games and won big trophies, been the player of the year at his club.”

Selling Mount to a rival club would likely upset many Chelsea fans, but the club understandably want to avoid the risk of losing him on a free transfer, as reports suggest.

Bringing in a replacement could prove costly, too, although the new ownership group has shown that they are not afraid to spend big on players.
