Enzo Maresca really wanted Chelsea to sign £40m goalkeeper before Filip Jorgensen deal

Chelsea are about to land a new goalkeeper as they close in on the signing of Villarreal’s Filip Jorgensen.

Chelsea have agreed a deal for Filip Jorgensen, so the expectation is that the 22-year-old will join the Blues’ squad this summer.

However, it appears that he may not have actually been Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca’s first-choice target for the goalkeeper position.

Whatever the case, Jorgensen is set to come in and provide competition to Robert Sanchez.

Sanchez has started Chelsea‘s first two pre-season games, but his position between the sticks now looks to be in real danger.

Enzo Maresca was keen on Mads Hermansen

Maresca has reunited with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall at Chelsea, with the pair working with each other at Leicester City last summer.

And it looks like the Italian was also keen on linking up with another Leicester player at Stamford Bridge.

According to Bold, Mads Hermansen was the goalkeeper who Maresca really wanted, and Chelsea made the 24-year-old a priority.

However, the Danish outlet has claimed that Leicester’s £40m price tag prevented a deal from happening.

How did Mads Hermansen perform last season?

Hermansen was one of the top-performing goalkeepers in the Championship last season.

According to FBref, the Dane’s save percentage was 73.4%, which was the third highest in the division.

Of course, that is not the only thing Maresca and Chelsea care about. Chelsea want a technical goalkeeper, someone who can play with their feet.

Maresca obviously believes Hermansen can do that well after making him his No.1 in the previous campaign.

But with the former Brondby man not coming to west London, Maresca will have to rely on Jorgensen instead. He will have to oust Sanchez out of the team first, though.

Chelsea’s first game of the season is a big one against Manchester City. Therefore, whoever gets the nod for that huge clash is likely to be the team’s No.1 for the beginning of the campaign.
