Fabrizio Romano names the Champions League club who tried to sign Andrey Santos from Chelsea

Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos is set to join Strasbourg on loan this summer after the Blues’ pre-season tour of America.

Andrey Santos spent the second half of last season at Strasbourg, working under Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira.

The 20-year-old will not get the chance to reunite with Vieira at the Ligue 1 club after the Frenchman parted ways with them on Thursday.

However, he will still be grateful that he had the opportunity to work with him last term. Santos revealed that Vieira gave him advice as his manager.

Liam Rosenior now looks set to take over at Chelsea‘s sister club, with The Athletic claiming that the former Hull City boss is in advanced talks with Strasbourg about their current vacancy.

Borussia Dortmund wanted Andrey Santos

Strasbourg were not the only club who were keen on signing Santos this summer. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund also wanted the young Brazilian.

Speaking about Santos’ loan move to Strasbourg on X, Romano said: “Andrey Santos will return to Strasbourg on loan after going on US tour with Chelsea, deal done.

“BVB and more clubs keen on signing him but Andrey spoke to Liam Rosenior about style of play implemented at CFC and Strasbourg.”

While the Brazil international is likely to get more minutes at Strasbourg, he may feel a bit disappointed about having to leave Chelsea for the French club.

Santos thought he was ideal for Enzo Maresca, which still may be the case, but he will not get to prove that in the new season it seems.

Strasbourg a good move for Andrey Santos

Strasbourg will be an environment that Santos is already familiar with after playing for the Ligue 1 side last season.

There, he will not have to go up against the likes of Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez for a place in the team, so the former Vasco da Gama should find it much easier to get game time.

Again, Santos may not have wanted to leave Maresca‘s squad this summer. But departing Stamford Bridge temporarily is probably in his best interest. Right now, there is too much competition in midfield.
