It looks like Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino could face some disappointment this transfer window.

Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez is a player who Mauricio Pochettino is keen on, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

However, Fabrizio Romano has just claimed on Substack that he is hearing that the 26-year-old is going to be signing a new contract soon.

“I’m afraid I don’t have anything very positive for Chelsea fans,” the transfer expert said.

Martinez has been in great form for Inter this season, scoring 15 goals in 16 Serie A appearances.

Lautaro Martinez signing new contract bad news for Chelsea

It is quite clear that Chelsea need to sign a new striker. There are doubts about Nicolas Jackson, who did not even start up front in the Blues’ 3-2 win against Luton Town over the weekend.

Pochettino used the centre-forward on the wing, which is a pretty interesting development. Does the Argentine perhaps see his future there? He has not been prolific enough to be the team’s first-choice No.9, scoring seven goals in 19 Premier League appearances this season.

It is by no means the worst record. But if Chelsea want to go up another level, then they probably need to add a better goalscorer to their squad. It is why Martinez would have been perfect for them.

The Argentina international has been really prolific for Inter as he has shown this term. If he does go on to put pen to paper on a new contract, that should end any hope Pochettino had of signing him.

Until that document is officially signed, though, the former Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur manager will be dreaming about having his compatriot in his starting XI. There is no doubt that Martinez is one of the top forwards in Europe who would improve this Chelsea side drastically.
