Spanish giants Atletico Madrid have now set a deadline for when they want the transfer saga involving Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher finalised by.

The future of Conor Gallagher, 24, has been one of the major talking points so far in the summer transfer window. There’s currently a lot of speculation about him potentially leaving Chelsea, and it’s not helpful that his involvement in Euro 2024 means he’s yet to join up with the squad for pre-season.

Some recent reports from GiveMeSport claim that Chelsea have accepted Atletico offer to sign Gallagher, which is worth in excess of €40m (£34m). However, the English midfielder is yet to make his mind up on his future, something he’s expected to do before he reports at Cobham for pre-season on 6 August.

But the latest speculation suggests that Gallagher may actually need to speed up his thought process on whether he wants a switch to Spain.

Atletico Madrid want Conor Gallagher saga wrapped up this weekend.

Respected journalist Fabrizio Romano claims via X that Atletico want a final answer by the end of this weekend from Gallagher on whether he’ll join them this summer. If that doesn’t happen, a transfer move to Madrid could completely collapse.

It is further explained that Chelsea’s proposal of a new three-year deal for the midfielder is still on the table. Ultimately, they don’t want to end up losing him on a free transfer next summer.

It’s been further claimed by journalist Ben Jacobs on X that Chelsea have told Gallagher he’ll only be a squad player if he decides to stay with them next season. There’s worries that the box-to-box central midfielder wouldn’t align with the possession-based style of new head coach Enzo Maresca.

Conor Gallagher would leave sizeable hole

There’s an argument to be made that Gallagher moving to Atletico could suit all parties in this particular transfer story. However, if he does end up leaving Chelsea, that certainly doesn’t make him a bad player.

He was one of the outstanding performers at Stamford Bridge during last season, contributing seven goals and nine assists across all competitions from midfield.

There’s so much talent in the midfield that Chelsea should be able to cope without Gallagher, but don’t think it’ll be an easy fix if he goes.
