Chelsea youngster Billy Gilmour is set to join English and Premier League rivals Norwich City on loan, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Well-respected journalist Romano has reported on his Twitter that a deal for Gilmour to join Norwich is at its “final stages”.

In addition, a loan fee has already been agreed over a season-long deal.

Norwich, who earned promotion from the Championship last season, are rebuilding their squad for another crack at the Premier League.

They look set to bring one of the best young prospects around to Carrow Road.

Gilmour, 20, is a Chelsea rising star who’s reputation is growing after a performance at Euro 2020. Unfortunately, his tournament was cut short due to testing positive for Covid-19 and his country ultimately exited the competition.

He made 11 senior appearances during an injury-hit campaign last season, so he’s being allowed to leave Stamford Bridge on a temporary basis.

Gilmour loan will divide option

For Gilmour, rumours suggest he will be at Norwich next season.

First of all, the opportunity to play week in week out in the Premier League is going to be invaluable experience.

He’s a deep-lying central midfield that has the talent to do it, so just needs the platform too alongside that.

Many hopeful Chelsea supporters feel he can be a regular in the Blues midfield in years to come, which is why perhaps a loan can fast-track that process.

However, his game has developed tenfold by being around the Chelsea first team group every day and players improve in different environments.
