Former Blue Frank Leboeuf has urged Chelsea to sign “a big defender” as he said he is not confident with two of Frank Lampard’s current centre-backs.
The west London outfit have already signed a couple of attackers this summer in Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.
They are also reportedly close to reaching an agreement to bring in Bayer Leverkusen’s top scorer Kai Havertz (the Telegraph).
In order to actually challenge for titles, however, Chelsea will also need an upgrade at the other end of the pitch, according to their former centre-back Leboueuf.
The former France international told ESPN FC: “[Frank Lampard needs to improve] all of them. That’s the problem.
“The goalkeeper is a big issue, but you have to go to the main [issue]. If you’re looking at the main issue, it’s the central defenders.
“[Kurt] Zouma is doing great, but I’m not confident about [Antonio] Rudiger, I’m not confident about [Andreas] Christensen.
“I don’t know what will happen with [Fikayo] Tomori, but I think they need a big guy.”
Leboeuf pointed out at how Virgil van Dijk made other Liverpool’s centre-backs – Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez – look better when he arrived.
“You need a big guy to make sure he’ll lead the defence,” he added.
“Look at Ramos. [Raphael] Varane is a fantastic player, but is he still the fantastic player when he plays for France as when he plays for Madrid with Sergio Ramos? He’s better with Real Madrid.
“They need a big guy in the centre of defence, yeah.”
