Chelsea boss Frank Lampard today issued an update on the clubs January transfer plan. He insisted they would not be ‘too reactionary’ following Saturday’s defeat to Everton.
The Blues fell to a third Premier League defeat in four games against the Toffees. This defeat, coupled with the shortening of the transfer ban on Friday has led to wild speculation about Chelsea’s January activity.
However, when speaking to the press ahead of Tuesday’s crucial Champions League game against Lille, Lampard played down the chances of a spending spree.
As reported by The Metro, when asked about the possibility of several new additions, Lampard said: ”I think you’ve got to be careful about being too reactionary – ban lifted and defeat to Everton – it’s quite easy to come to that conclusion.
”Just as much as people at the start of the season who were saying we’ve got all these young boys, this is going to be no problem, we don’t need any players. I think at a club like Chelsea there needs to be a balance. You have a strong squad which I believe we have but you have to look at can we strengthen.
”And there will time times going forward, whether it’s January or next summer, of course, we’re going to look at an opportunity to strengthen because we want to improve.”
Whilst playing down the chances of a 2004 like spending spree in January, Lampard has left the door open for some new acquisitions in January. Many players have already been linked with the Blues, including Jadon Sancho and Ben Chilwell.
