'Full agreement': Club ready to sign £7m defender linked with Chelsea, medical on Wednesday - Romano
Marseille are reportedly set to sign Lens defender Jonathan Clauss, who’s been linked as a Chelsea target this summer.
According to well-respected journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Marseille have reached a “full agreement” to complete the transfer of the 29-year-old from Lens.
It is understood an €8million (£7million) fee has now been agreed between the French clubs.
Romano explains the right wing-back will now undergo medical tests on Wednesday morning ahead of his move.
It’s been reported recently that Chelsea have put Clauss on their radar as a potential target if club captain Cesar Azpilicueta leaves.
However, it looks like the Blues will be too late to the party on this deal.
Marseille to sign Jonathan Clauss
Ligue 1 side Marseille are primed to sign a player in Clauss that’s very highly rated, especially as Chelsea and Manchester United have both been rumoured around his name this summer.
The wing-back finished last season with an eye-catching tally of five goals and 11 assists in 40 games across all competitions.
He’s now a four-time capped France international that looks a snip at only £7million, but he’s entering the final year of his deal at Lens.
Chelsea’s RWB role
With Clauss potentially beyond Chelsea’s reach, it’ll be interesting to see how the right wing-back slot shapes up at Stamford Bridge in the new season.
Of course, Reece James is the front-runner to play in that role most weeks.
Ethan Ampadu, who’s a versatile youngster in the Blues pre-season squad, is one potential cover at wing-back. In addition, reported target Jules Kounde has the flexibility to slot on to the right of defence.
