A swam of Chelsea supporters on social media were encouraged by the latest comment from Florentino Perez about Raphael Varane.

In an interview with El Larguero on Wednesday, Perez was asked about Varane’s current contract situation, which is set to run out next June.

“Varane? I’m happy with our team,” said the Los Blancos president.

“If players don’t want to stay at Madrid they can leave.”

Blues fans were on red alert following this declaration, having been linked with the French defender for some time (AS).

Here’s how they reacted on Twitter:

Varane is entering into the final 12 months of his Madrid deal, with no indication yet he will sign an extension.

The 27-year-old should have no shortage of suitors if he decides to leave the Bernabeu.

Chelsea and Manchester United are seemingly the two front-runners to sign the experienced centre-back.

Thomas Tuchel’s desire to bring in a new central defender becomes more apparent by the day.

Interest surrounding Bayern Munich’s Niklas Sule has apparently ramped up (The Athletic), with uncertainties over his future also growing.

Jose Gimenez from Atletico Madrid and Jules Kounde of Sevilla are also said to be on the Blues radar.

But Varane would certainly be an excellent choice and Chelsea could get him as a free agent when his contract does expire.

With Perez still trying to splash the European Super League’s murky waters, now might be the best time for players to set sail from Spain.
