Rio Ferdinand felt that Chelsea must target Paris Saint Germain’s Marquinhos if they want to challenge for titles next season.

Speaking on Vibe with Five, Ferdinand was asked what it would take for the Blues to be Premier League contenders in 2021/22.

“I think a centre-half, if they are really going for it,” admitted the former Manchester United skipper.

Chelsea are certainly in the market for a new defensive presence, with Jules Kounde of Sevilla and Niklas Sule from Bayern Munich up for discussion.

However, Ferdinand offered another figure that he believed would take Chelsea to the next stage.

He said: “If any team is in the market for a centre-back right now out of the top teams, with the finances, Marquinhos is the only place I’m going.

“Big game player. Every big game you see that guy plays, he turns up. Fit as you like.

“Quick. Robust. Battled hardened. Understand the big game environments.

“Top player. Great attitude. Leader. Got it all.

“If I’m looking for a centre-back of experience who can take me to the next level, he’s the one I’m going for.”

Marquinhos is currently captain of PSG, having taken over from Thiago Silva when he joined Chelsea last summer.

He’s struggled with injuries this season, but in the main his importance to Mauricio Pochettino’s side cannot be overstated.

The 26-year-old has been in Paris since 2013 and quickly developed into one of the games most renowned defenders.

Thomas Tuchel knows all about the Brazilian centre-back, having worked with him during his time in charge of the Parisians.

“Marquinhos is the heart and soul of our team,” said the Blues boss last January whilst coaching the Ligue 1 champions.

A reunion between player and manager might still be on the cards.

According to the Sunday World, Tuchel has already recommended Marquinhos to the Chelsea board as a potential transfer target.

Out of all the names brandished in the Blues direction, this may be the most appealing.

I was genuinely shocked to discover Marquinhos was only 26, not the mid-30s I imagined he was.

He comes across as so mature and authoritative, something any top club could benefit from.
