'He is commanding': Manager reacts after his club confirm loan signing of 19-year-old Chelsea prospect
Peterborough United manager Grant McCann shared his delight on the weekend after his club completed the loan signing of Chelsea prospect Lucas Bergstrom.
League One side Peterborough confirmed on Saturday they’ve signed Chelsea’s young goalkeeper on a season-long loan.
The 19-year-old’s heading out on his first loan away from Stamford Bridge, so it’s a big next step in his development.
He’s a colossus 6ft 7in keeper that’s played plenty of youth football for the Blues, but is still waiting to make a first-team debut. Incidentally, he did make a senior match day squad in last season’s Champions League groups stages against Zenit.
Boro chuffed with Lucas Bergstrom loan
Peterborough, who were relegated from the Championship last season, have moved to strengthen their squad to try aid a promtoion bid in the third tier.
It’s going to be interesting to see if Chelsea talent Bergstrom can break into the starting line-up.
The Blues teenager played regularly in the Under-23s side last season. He’s been away with the Finland Under-21 squad recently, too.
Peterborough boss McCann has given a glowing verdict on his new loan signing.
“Lucas is very highly-rated at Chelsea. He is commanding, a very good shot-stopper and extremely aggressive from crosses and good with his feet. I must give huge thanks to Carlo Cudicini and Chelsea for trusting us in developing Lucas further and we can’t wait to work with him,” McCann said.
Chelsea pool of talent
The success rate in recent years of Chelsea youngsters out on loan means Peterborough supporters could well be excited by this transfer.
It seems like a good time in Bergstrom’s young career to try make a name for himself out on loan.
There’s a number of young goalkeepers on Chelsea’s books that will all have aspirations of one day competing with first-choice number one Edouard Mendy at Stamford Bridge.
23-year-old shot-stopper Nathan Baxter, who spent last season out on loan with Hull City, is reportedly in line for a promotion to Thomas Tuchel’s senior squad.
