'He told me': Manager says £119k-a-week star wants to leave, after links with Chelsea

Everton manager Rafael Benitez has confirmed that reported Chelsea target Lucas Digne wants to move during the current January transfer window.

Digne, who’s receiving several transfer links to Chelsea, could be on the move this month.

The French left-back has been a top Everton performer in the Premier League during recent years, but has now fallen down the pecking order under the Bentiez reign.

Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has previously reported the Chelsea interest in the £119,000-a-week full-back.

Interestingly, 90min reports the player himself would much rather transfer to the Blues than other interested clubs West Ham, Newcastle United and Leicester City.

Benitez has opened up on Digne’s future in his Friday press conference by admitting he’s looking to depart.

“I had a couple of conversations with him he told me what he thought. What do you expect a manager to do when a player is thinking about leaving?” Benitez responded when asked if Digne wants to be at Everton,” Benitez said.

Chelsea need deal ASAP

If possible, Chelsea need to push a deal over the line for Digne in the next few days.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have to fit in five games in the next couple of weeks, so bringing in that extra cover at left wing-back is vital. They will have played Tottenham (twice), Chesterfield, Manchester City and Brighton all by 23rd January.

Digne is fit and has plenty of experience in English football, so securing his signature immediately to provide competition for Marcos Alonso would be great.

However, these things are never quite so simple in the mad world of football transfer business. Benitez’s comments about Digne do at least confirm he’s actively looking to leave Merseyside this month, though.
