'I know for a fact': PL manager still has sights set on signing 20-year-old Chelsea player - journalist
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe reportedly wants to sign Chelsea youngster Armando Broja this summer.
Well-respected Sky journalist Keith Downie has claimed that Newcastle’s boss is “definitely” still interested in the Blues 20-year-old striker in this window.
Apparently, this is a transfer that may still be on the cards.
“Absolutely. I know for a fact he’s definitely on the list,” Downie said to GIVEMESPORT when asked if Broja is on the radar of Newcastle coach Howe.
“I’m reading between the lines a little bit, because I’m obviously been away, but I don’t think I would rule that one out totally yet.”
Eddie Howe wants Armando Broja
Broja, who’s returned to Chelsea this summer from an impressive loan at Southampton last season, is a player whose name is flying around the transfer rumour mill.
The Albania international is an exciting young centre-forward that proved he can cut it in the Premier League. Is he ready to be the leading No.9 in Thomas Tuchel’s squad at Stamford Bridge, though?
It’s been reported Newcastle and Everton are both interested in Broja amid imminent showdown talks between him and Chelsea.
The fact that 44-year-old Howe wants to take him to St James’ Park is an interesting added element, too.
Newcastle do have Callum Wilson as their first-choice striker in the squad, but he’s had a terrible luck with injuries over the years.
Diego Costa 2.0
Of course, Broja’s still at the very early stages of his development and he does have plenty of improving to do.
It’s easy to see why he’s been compared to ex-Chelsea striker Diego Costa, though.
Broja is very much a bullish centre-forward with aggression, pace and strength, something that makes him a great fit for the Premier League.
His aim in the next few years is to become more clinical and confident around the final third of the pitch.
For Chelsea, they need to weigh up if they think he’s ready to compete for a first-team spot this season.
