Well-respected journalist Simon Johnson has explained that the Chelsea interest in RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol is unlikely to lead to a transfer any time soon.

The Athletic journalist reports that Chelsea do still like the 20-year-old defender, who was at the heart of transfer speculation immediately after impressing at the winter World Cup for third-placed Croatia.

It is understood that Leipzig will ask for more than £77.8million to sell the centre-back, though, which is an issue for the Blues.

Johnson claims that he “would be surprised” if Gvardiol does move to Stamford Bridge in the summer due to the fact Chelsea are prioritising other players.

Chelsea interest in Gvardiol

Graham Potter’s side were heavily linked with Gvardiol last month, but those rumours have gone a bit quiet now the January transfer window is actually open.

Described as “very special” by Pat Nevin, Gvardiol is such an impressive young defender that was colossus at the World Cup.

The left-footed centre-half would be a really exciting addition at the Bridge, but reports suggest a new defender could already be on his way to the Bridge this month.

Football London claims that Monaco’s 21-year-old centre-back Benoit Badiashile is now in London to undergo a medical ahead of his move to Chelsea.

It’s pretty evident that Chelsea need to improve their backline somehow.

Thiago Silva is holding things together as the glue in the defence this campaign, but it’s time for some of his fellow centre-halves to step up.
