Simon Phillips has stated that Edouard Mendy is seriously considering his Chelsea future.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Stamford Bridge insider Phillips declared that the goalkeeper has an exit from the club on his mind.

Mendy’s tenure as the number one in South West London has come under serious contention this season.

He lost his place in between the posts to Kepa Arrizabalaga after sustaining an injury in September.

Even after recovering from the minor problem, Graham Potter decided to stick with Kepa instead of the Senegal international.

Kepa then suffered his own wounds, allowing his fellow gloved guardian the chance to redeem himself.

This opportunity was not grasped, however.

Edouard Mendy is debating his Chelsea status

In the five fixtures Mendy played for Chelsea ahead of the World Cup, he conceded nine goals and didn’t keep a single clean sheet.

His only shut-out across the entire term came against Everton on the Premier League’s opening weekend.

This return has reportedly led Todd Boehly to scour the market for alternative options in goal, with Potter echoing the thoughts of his owner.

“I’d be surprised if he stays past the summer. From the things I’m hearing, it’s on his side as well as the club side. Chelsea are very unsure on his ability now,” explained Phillips.

“Potter, as you’ve obviously seen, has dropped him for Kepa purely because he is better with his feet. And that’s where Mendy is a real liability, and Chelsea are concerned about that as well as Potter.”

Remembering Edouard Mendy

It appears Mendy must make a miraculous turnaround if he is to continue his journey with Chelsea.

His adventure might just be spoiled by the past few months, having been such a crucial figure in the team’s recent success.

FIFA named him their goalkeeper of the year in January, following the 30-year-old’s performances in the previous Champions League campaign.

Fans of the Blues will never forget his saves and clean sheets as Thomas Tuchel’s side lifted the trophy last May.

Their memories of Mendy may just be muddied slightly due to the recent downfall.
