Fabrizio Romano has issued an update overnight on Chelsea’s efforts to sign Moises Caicedo.

He claimed in his YouTube video that Brighton made it clear to the player that he would now be sold to the highest bidder, which at this stage appears to be Liverpool.

Last night was a key one in terms of finding out where Caicedo will be playing his football next season.

After a summer where Stamford Bridge looked the likely destination, it was Liverpool who agreed a British-record fee to bring him in this summer.

The news will be a blow to the Blues if confirmed, and will see them forced to look elsewhere to strengthen their midfield.

Romano has claimed that it remains to be seen if Chelsea will bid for his services again.

Caicedo to go to the highest bidder

He said: “Incredible saga. In the morning Liverpool called Brighton and told them we want to bid for Moises Caicedo, if there is still space to try to make this deal happen. They got a green light from Brighton and in that moment Brighton informed player’s side and clubs, including Chelsea and Bayern.

“Bayern just called in the morning too, to understand the situation of Caicedo but didn’t put in a bid.

“So Liverpool and Chelsea received formal communication that Brighton wanted the deal to be done by the end of the day – Thursday or at the latest on Friday.

“This is what Brighton communicated. Why? Because they were told on player’s side that Moises Caicedo would not play for Brighton any more.

“Now Brighton informed Caicedo that he would be sold to the highest bidder, so this was the message, to Liverpool and to Chelsea. They waited for Liverpool to submit an official bid.

“Liverpool will bid for Caicedo, this is the feeling. It’s very clear – a bid is expected and it’s expected to be more than £80 million, which was the last bid from Chelsea. Let’s see how Chelsea will react, if Chelsea will send one more bid.”

If the Blues do move on, it is likely to be towards Romeo Lavia from Southampton, who they have already had a bid rejected by.
