‘Incredible’ PL Player Chelsea enquired about could now cost over £100m – journalist

Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes could cost Chelsea more than £100m if they decide to make a fresh move for him in the future.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Chelsea made an enquiry to sign Bruno Guimaraes in the summer but he could now agree a new deal at Newcastle that could include a massive release clause.

In his CaughtOffside column, Jacobs wrote: “Chelsea and Liverpool were both told when they enquired that the Brazilian is not for sale. The expectation is that a new deal could have a release clause in it, but interestingly this would go against Newcastle’s policy since PIF took majority control of the club in October 2021.

“Guimaraes will also have to decide if it’s better to agree to one. In theory it would give him wiggle room, but any clause would be in excess of £100m and informed by the packages agreed this summer for both Declan Rice (£105m) and Moises Caicedo (£115m).”

If Chelsea are really desperate to sign Guimaraes, a £100m-plus release clause may not be enough to deter them.

They have already spent an incredible amount of money on Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, showing that the club are not afraid to fork out on a midfielder.

Bruno Guimaraes does not need to be a priority for Chelsea right now

It would be a surprise if signing Guimaraes was at the top of Chelsea’s to-do list.

They look strong in midfield now after bringing in Caicedo and Romeo Lavia during the summer transfer window.

The duo have joined Fernandez, Conor Gallagher, Carney Chukwuemeka and Lesley Ugochukwu as options who can play in the middle of the pitch at Stamford Bridge.

Guimaraes is certainly a good player, with his manager Eddie Howe describing him as an “incredible talent”. But if Chelsea are going to be spending over £100m on one footballer again, then it should be on a forward.

While the Blues did sign Nicolas Jackson over the summer, they still look like they are lacking a truly elite No.9. Their Senegal international is not that yet, managing to score just one goal so far this season.
