‘It surprise me’: Darren Bent can’t believe transfer rumour he’s hearing about £63m Chelsea player now

Darren Bent has expressed his surprise at talk of Manchester United wanting to sign Marc Cucurella from Chelsea.

The 39-year-old made the comments when speaking on talkSPORT.

So, what did Darren Bent say about Marc Cucurella? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well – according to Fabrizio Romano – Manchester United have now agreed personal terms with the Spain international after Luke Shaw suffered a serious injury.

It follows a story from The Athletic – who claimed that Chelsea are open to loaning Cucurella out before Friday’s transfer deadline, after Mauricio Pochettino left him on the bench in every Premier League outing so far this season.

While Erik ten Hag clearly sees a quality alternative to Shaw in the Spaniard, Bent cannot understand why the Red Devils are keen to sign the Chelsea No.3 this summer.

He told talkSPORT: “It hasn’t worked for him at Chelsea. I don’t know why Manchester United would want to entertain that. He just hasn’t looked up to the level since he has been at Chelsea.

“It surprises me. I would probably rather go Rico Henry. He’s young, raw. Cucurella just hasn’t shown signs – I think at times he has looked better at Chelsea when he has played left of a three.”

Those are all valid points from Bent, which is why those at Stamford Bridge are surely hoping for a deal to materialise before the deadline.

Many benefits for Chelsea if Marc Cucurella leaves

If Chelsea can offload the £63m man before Friday’s deadline, there will be a number of benefits for the Blues.

Firstly, all of – or a large chunk of – Cucurella’s salary will be removed from the wage bill.

The Spaniard earns £175,000-a-week at Chelsea, which is a ridiculous amount for someone offering very little.

Furthermore, Cucurella leaving would open up more opportunities for Ian Maatsen, who is competing with Chilwell and the 25-year-old for Chelsea’s left wing-back spot.

The precocious Dutchman is said to be considering his future at Stamford Bridge, so it would potentially convince him to stay in west London if Pochettino offloads a senior rival for his position.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Cucurella is expected to join Manchester United.
