David Ornstein has provided an intriguing Chelsea takeover update that involves Monaco.

Well-respected Athletic journalist Ornstein has reported that Monaco’s technical director Paul Mitchell is admired by some parties bidding to buy Chelsea.

It is understood two of the four consortiums shortlisted to buy the Blues have “very high” admiration of 40-year-old recruitment chief Mitchell.

Of course, that shortlist of four has been whittled down to three since the Ricketts family withdrew their offer last week. It’s now down to consortiums led by Todd Boehly, Sir Martin Broughton and Stephen Pagliucam fighting it out to win the club’s ownership. A final decision is drawing closer after last week’s final deadline for bids, too.

Ornstein has discussed in a new podcast the latest state of Chelsea’s takeover saga.

“It’s my understanding that from the initial four shortlisted bidders, two of them have very high admiration for Paul Mitchell,” Ornstein explained.

“We have reported previously that all four of the potential owners were keen to keep Marina Granovskaia. She heads up the day to day operation at Chelsea.

“Whereas the sporting director has not been filled at that club since [Michael] Emenalo left in 2017.

“Chelsea haven’t filled it because Granovskaia has occupied that position, but they are just thinking about structures and how things might come together if they win the bid.

“At the moment he is occupying the role of technical director at AS Monaco.”

New era at Chelsea

Everything’s up in the air at Stamford Bridge until the winners of the takeover battle are named.

Mitchell, who’s worked in recruitment roles at both Tottenham and RB Leipzig in the past, is a well-respected name in the industry.

All of the Chelsea fanbase are intrigued to see what the club’s transfer policy will be like under new stewardship.

There’s been a set way during the past couple of decades with Roman Abramovich at the helm, but perhaps a new method is coming.
