‘It’s true’: Romano says Chelsea could sign ‘brilliant’ player for £72m, Tuchel had big doubts about him

Fabrizio Romano has claimed in his CaughtOffside column that Chelsea have the option to sign Tammy Abraham due to a buy-back clause included when he was sold.

The striker was sold to Roma in 2021 after struggling to break into the starting team following the big summer of attacking additions when Frank Lampard was in charge.

However, it became clear that new manager Thomas Tuchel also didn’t fancy him, reportedly left unimpressed with what he was providing in training.

His career has no doubt taken an upward turn since combining with former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho at Roma, with the pair winning the inaugural Conference League trophy last season.

His time in Italy has seen him praised by many in the media, with TalkSPORT’s Ray Parlour describing him as ‘brilliant’.

Chelsea have Abraham buy-back clause

Romano has now claimed that if Chelsea want to make a move for Abraham, they would have the chance due to the buy-back clause they inserted.

He said: “Yes, it’s true that Chelsea have €80m buy-back clause for Tammy Abraham next summer but again, Tammy is happy at Roma right now and there are no talks or negotiations with any clubs.

“It’s really important to mention that he’s happy there with Jose Mourinho as manager now – the Portuguese has given him a chance to shine and it’s been an important step for him in his career, so we will see in the next months or years about a Premier League return.”

A long term solution for the striker role at Chelsea is seemingly required, with the club seemingly bringing in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as a stop gap option.

Abraham has proven that he can be far more than just a target man, with his ability on the ball remarkably deceptive and his ability to find the net still on show.
