Chelsea are leading the transfer race for highly sought-after Borussia Dortmund striker Youssoufa Moukoko, according to Sky Germany journalist Marc Behrenbeck.

The 18-year-old has emerged as one of the most exciting young talents in Europe after a strong first half of the season for Borussia Dortmund.

Moukoko has already racked up six goals and three assists from 14 appearances (eight starts) in Bundesliga so far and has reportedly caught a lot of attention from several top clubs.

Unfortunately for Dortmund, they are not exactly in a strong position to fend off interest in the young striker.

Moukoko is in the final year of his contract at Signal Iduna Park, and according to his agent, his client has yet to agree to extend his contract at the club.

“I can confirm that we are not yet close to signing a contract extension with Borussia Dortmund,” his agent, Pattrick Williams, told Sky Germany.

“However, we are still in contact with Borussia Dortmund and will see what the next few days bring.”

According to Sky Germany transfer expert Behrenbeck, a number of clubs, including Premier League sides, are aware of Moukoko’s contract situation at Dortmund, but Chelsea seem to be in the pole position.

“It is clear that a lot of top clubs are asking about Moukoko and are keen on him as he is available on a free transfer in the summer and is a bargain,” Behrenbeck explained.

“We hear that Chelsea are the closest. There have already been negotiations and talks.

“More clubs; Manchester United, Liverpool, Barcelona and Newcastle, are on the list, but Chelsea are the hottest, the others aren’t ready yet.”

Chelsea may be in the market for a new number nine in January since Armando Broja is expected to be out for the rest of the season after rupturing an anterior cruciate ligament in last week’s friendly match against Aston Villa.
