‘Keep an eye’: Tuchel personally rates 27-year-old PL defender, Chelsea could yet bid – Romano

Chelsea could reportedly still make a move to bring Manchester City’s Nathan Ake back to the club this summer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, via CaughtOffside, the defender is highly admired by Blues boss Thomas Tuchel, who is set to have a big say in transfers at the club this summer.

Ake came through the Chelsea youth sides after joining from Feyenoord’s academy in 2011, although he struggled to break through as a starter, making just 17 appearances for the club until his permanent departure in 2017.

Since then, he has acquired a big move to Pep Guardiola’s side, winning the Premier League three times to add to his title with the Blues.

Despite the team success, the Dutchman has remained a bit-part player, making just 14 appearances in the sensational league-winning campaign.

Ake’s inability to nail down a starting role could lure him to a move away, and Chelsea’s shortage of defenders could see the club look to launch a reunion.

Romano also claims manager Tuchel’s admiration of the Netherlands international could see the club make a move, given Todd Boehly’s reported promise to give the German the reins this summer.

He said: “Todd Boehly will listen to Thomas Tuchel’s ideas this summer. The plan is to reinforce the team and this is being worked on.

“Matthijs de Ligt is a priority for the defence, but the Blues are waiting to see if Juventus will extend his contract or not; keep an eye also on Nathan Ake because he is highly rated by Tuchel.”

Ake has developed massively since a move away from the club, and his ability to feature on the left of the defence could appeal to the Blues.

Antonio Rudiger had nailed down the left-centre-back role in a back three, so his departure has left a void the club will find difficult to fill.

Better yet, his experience at full-back could offer cover for Ben Chilwell, with Marcos Alonso still rumoured to be on the move to Barcelona.
