Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on a deal for Enzo Fernandez between Chelsea and Benfica.

Typing on Twitter, Romano revealed that the Benfica president Rui Costa had still not ‘given the green light’ for the midfielder to join the Premier League side.

During a ‘tense night of talks’ on Monday, the most powerful figure at the Portuguese club seemingly remained stubborn in his efforts to hold off Chelsea for as long as possible.

Todd Boehly and his team ‘wanted a breakthrough’ on the evening, but will have to instead continue their pursuit during the final day of the transfer window.

‘Madness’ is the word used to describe the situation by Romano; we couldn’t have put it better ourselves, Fab.

It’s set to be a crazy couple of hours for Chelsea and Fernandez, as the pair want the same goal but have one major obstacle in their way.

Costa simply will not budge until he feels the terms of the transaction suit his needs, rather than those of the Stamford Bridge chain of command.

He has been offered the £106m fee that will cover the 22-year-old’s release clause.

Yet, the Benfica chief clearly hasn’t taken kindly to Chelsea’s proposal at paying the clause in instalments.

Who will break first? Let’s wait to find out…
