AC Milan technical director Paolo Maldini has opened up about ongoing negotiations with Chelsea over their priority target Tiemoue Bakayoko.
It is safe to say that the 25-year-old is not in Frank Lampard’s plan at Chelsea.
The midfielder failed to impress the Chelsea manager during last year’s pre-season and was sent out on loan to his old club AS Monaco.
Now that he has returned to Chelsea after Monaco refuse to exercise the option to buy in his loan contract, a return to Serie A is on the cards as Milan director Maldini confirmed their interest.
Speaking at today’s club media conference (as quoted by Football London), Maldini told the press: “We’re in talks with Chelsea to sign him.
“Tiemoue is one of our main targets.”
Bakayoko spent the 2018/19 season at Milan where he made 31 appearances in Serie A and helped them finish in fifth place.
According to a report from Goal, Milan have made an offer to sign Bakayoko on a loan deal with an option to buy at £30million.
Chelsea, however, are reportedly keen to sell him permanently this summer, which makes sense considering Bakayoko has only two years left in his contract.
Another option mentioned in the report was a loan deal with an obligation to buy at £20m, rather than an option.
Bakayoko himself has expressed his desire to return to Milan.
He told Tuttomercatoweb two weeks ago: “Everyone knows that Milan is in my heart and I have good memories.
“At the moment I’m a Chelsea player, then we’ll see in football.”
