Dean Jones told GiveMeSport that Chelsea are looking into the possibility of recruiting Barcelona’s Sergino Dest.
The January transfer target for the Blues is to land either one or two more options at wing-back.
Injuries to Reece James and Ben Chilwell have left the team extremely light in this particular department.
Everton’s Lucas Digne is reportedly extremely high on the Stamford Bridge wish list, yet other names are clearly being explored.
Who is Sergino Dest?
One of those being Barca’s Dest, a player with plenty of attributes to entice Chelsea’s hierarchy.
Although he is primarily a right-back, the 21-year-old can play on the opposite flank pretty comfortably.
He has pace to burn, with UEFA recording a top speed of 32.1 km/h in the Champions League this season.
The American international also knows one member of Tuchel’s dressing room better than most.
Dest and Christian Pulisic have been part of the USMNT project together since 2019.
“Pulisic is a really great player, he’s fast, really good at dribbling,” said the Camp Nou defender on Pulisic.
“I saw in the first couple of training sessions before I made my debut against Mexico, he was so good, you know, in the training.
“I had some recovery sessions so I was just looking at the training, but he was almost unstoppable.”
Chelsea looking into Barca’s group
A friendly face would welcome Dest if he decided to depart Barca in this window.
Perhaps this is one of the reasons why Chelsea are seemingly keeping their eye on the La Liga star’s movements.
“They’re (Chelsea) looking at other options (to Digne) as well,” said Jones.
“And that’s why somebody like Sergino Dest at Barcelona is somebody that they’re monitoring or asking about because he’s so flexible in terms of his position.
“He plays on the right, but he can play on the left as well.”
How likely is Dest’s move to Chelsea?
Of course, tearing Dest away from his Spanish settlement won’t exactly be easy.
He is contracted to Barca until 2025, having only joined them from Ajax in 2020.
Also, the player’s fitness might be an issue.
Dest has played just two top-flight Spanish matches since the end of October, following a bout of covid and injury issues.
Tuchel really doesn’t need any more damaged soldiers in his unit, therefore Digne feels like the more favourable option right now.
