Newcastle United want to bring a former Chelsea player back to the Premier League.

That is according to a report from Sport.

It claims that Newcastle are interested in signing Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen, who left Chelsea last year.

The Dane reached the end of his contract and did not want to put pen to paper on a new one, deciding to join Barcelona on a free transfer instead.

But if Newcastle get their way, Christensen will be making a return to England.

Chelsea have moved on from Andreas Christensen

There probably would not be too many disappointed Chelsea fans if Christensen ended up joining Newcastle.

Since his departure, the Blues have really strengthened their defence, bringing in the likes of Wesley Fofana and Axel Disasi.

Fofana has not played a game this season because of injury, but Disasi has featured in all but one Premier League fixture.

The 25-year-old has been pretty solid under Mauricio Pochettino, winning 2.2 aerial duels per game (WhoScored). It is the second-highest average in Chelsea’s squad.

Thiago Silva is also still at the club, while Levi Colwill returned from his loan spell at Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer.

All in all, Chelsea have options in central defence. They do not have to cry about Christensen’s departure or him possibly coming back to English football one day.

The 27-year-old was also not always the most reliable player at Stamford Bridge. He missed a lot of games because of injury and other problems.

The above is not to say Christensen is a bad player and is disliked after his Chelsea exit. It is just that the Blues have got over his departure.

When all of his central defenders are fit, Pochettino will be spoilt for choice. It took a while, but the Blues have filled the holes that Christensen and Antonio Rudiger left behind after their moves to Spain.
