Lewis Bate will initially join up with Leeds United’s Under-23s side after a transfer from Chelsea on Thursday – and some Blues fans on Twitter can’t believe that part of the deal.

Leeds confirmed on their official website yesterday that they have signed Bate for an undisclosed fee from Chelsea.

In addition, they announced he will be linking up with Mark Jackson’s Under-23s for the forthcoming 2021/22 season.

The 18-year-old has decided to end a 10-year association with Chelsea to join Premier League rivals Leeds.

He’s an extremely talented left-footed central midfielder that was instrumental in the Blues Under-23s team last season, so many were expecting him to get straight into the Leeds senior squad.

However, the announcement has shocked plenty.

In fairness, Leeds are doing what’s best for them. They have a process that works.

Ian Poveda is a perfect example at Elland Road to show it could be a very quick jump from the academy to the first team for Bate.

Poveda, 21, joined Leeds back in January 2020 as an emerging talent from Manchester City’s academy. He came straight into the senior fold, and played in the Premier League for them last season.

It’s going to be a surprise if Bate isn’t seen around the Leeds first team pretty quickly. He looks on paper like an ideal understudy to Kalvin Phillips.

Here are some Chelsea fans reacting to the Bate transfer:
