‘One phone call was enough’: Chelsea loanee says he didn’t need much convincing to leave club

Romelu Lukaku says it took just one phone call to convince him to leave Chelsea and join AS Roma.

Chelsea recently allowed Romelu Lukaku to head to Roma on loan in a move that has seen him reunite with Jose Mourinho.

Speaking to Roma TV, as relayed by RomaPress, he said: “One phone call was enough to convince me to come here. The Friedkins called me a few days before the deal.

“We talked for half an hour about the ambitions they have for this club and for the fans and then everything went downhill from there.”

Lukaku spent last season at Roma’s Serie A rivals Inter Milan, scoring 10 times in 25 league appearances for them. However, his love story with the Nerazzurri now looks to be fully over.

Lukaku’s time at Chelsea has been an absolute disaster and it is clear that he wanted to leave the club.

Still, you cannot help but feel that he actually did have something to offer to Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Nicolas Jackson has impressed since arriving from Villarreal, recently netting in the Blues’ 3-0 win against Luton Town, but it remains to be seen if he will become a reliable goalscorer in the Premier League.

His deputy Armando Broja is yet to return to first-team action after the serious injury he sustained last term as well, so there are some concerns when it comes to that centre-forward position at Stamford Bridge.

All things considered, then, Lukaku’s kind of firepower is probably what this Chelsea squad needs, but with the Belgian having not been happy in west London, he had to go in the end.
