Our view: Chelsea must offer Willian a two-year contract extension

Willian’s contract with Chelsea is due to expire in the summer. The club generally runs a policy of offering over 30’s one-year extensions but should break that rule and offer the Brazilian a two-year extension on his current deal.

The 31-year-old has had his critics but has been a man reborn under Frank Lampard. He has been the preferred starter on the right side of the attack for most of the season and Chelsea cannot currently afford to lose him.

Although Callum Hudson-Odoi has looked dangerous there in recent games, Willian’s experience could prove vital. He has played in some big occasions for the Blues and will not be phased on the big stage. He could also provide crucial in helping to nurture the young talent Chelsea currently have on the wings.

The current wide men at Lampard’s disposal include Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic. If the club were successful in their pursuit of Jadon Sancho, that would be three wingers under the age of 23.

It would also not be the first time the club has given a 30+ player a contract extension of more than a year. David Luiz was given a two-year extension after he turned 30, and it would be fair for Willian to expect the same.

Whether Lampard sees him as his starting right winger for next season or not, the club should certainly offer him a deal. He has been a great servant and one of the club’s most reliable players in the last decade.
