Our view: Chelsea need to consider a move for Danny Ings

Chelsea need a striker now more than ever. Tammy Abraham limped off the pitch after Tuesday night’s draw with Arsenal and the Blues are seriously lacking firepower. Lampard should consider making a move for Southampton star Danny Ings.

The 27-year-old, who cost £20m from Liverpool in 2018 (Telegraph), has been in superb form so far this season. He has scored 16 goals in 26 appearances for the Saints and is currently scoring at a rate of a goal in every 118 Premier League minutes.

Ings has been a crucial part of Southampton’s resurgence up the table in recent weeks. The Saints are currently ninth in the table and looking like a side that will comfortably avoid relegation.

The Blues are not having such a good time at the moment. Lampard’s side have won just two of their last five games and are simply not posing enough of a threat going forward. Abraham is carrying the goalscoring burden alone and needs some assistance.

Chelsea have been linked with several strikers so far this month, but Ings is yet to be mentioned. Ralph Hasenhuttl will not want to lose his top scorer and star man, but the temptation of a second attempt at a Champions League club could prove too much for the Saints striker.

Ings is a proven Premier League goalscorer. If he can stay fit, he can be a 20 goals a season striker. Those are the kind of numbers that Chelsea need and a move for the former Liverpool man would carry less risk than a European forward. Making at least an inquiry seems like a no brainer.
