Our view: Chelsea should make a move for Dwight McNeil in January

Chelsea have been linked with a whole host of wide men in recent weeks. Wilfried Zaha, Jadon Sancho, and Samuel Chukwueze to name just three. One name that has not been mentioned however is Burnley winger Dwight McNeil.

The 20-year-old has put in some impressive performances for Sean Dyche’s team this season. He has scored just once in 20 games but does already have four assists to his name.

He is a left-sided traditional winger who possesses excellent crossing ability and an eye for a pass. McNeil has recently broken into the England U-21 side and would certainly be a signing with the future in mind. He may not make the instant impact that a player like Jadon Sancho would, but he would come at a fraction of the price.

Crystal Palace have previously been linked with a £20 million move for the winger (The Sun), and at that fee in the current market, you can hardly go wrong. After being let go from Manchester United in 2014, McNeil has rebuilt his career at Burnley and will soon be looking to take the next step in what he will be hoping is a career at the very top of the game.

He could learn a lot from senior wingers Pedro and Willian and would fit right in with a whole host of young English talent currently plying their trade at Stamford Bridge.

Some fans would probably be underwhelmed if McNeil came in at Stamford Bridge, but the 20-year-old has a lot to offer and will get significantly better in the coming years. Lampard could do a lot worse than bringing McNeil in at Stamford Bridge.
