Paul Merson has claimed that Chelsea’s reported forward target Edinson Cavani is exactly the type of signing the club need to get over the line during the January transfer window.
According to the Telegraph, Frank Lampard’s side have joined the race for Paris Saint-Germain’s striker Cavani and made an enquiry for him.
It is understood that the 32-year-old has informed the French giants he wants to leave and handed in a transfer request to try force a January exit.
The report details that the Blues have joined Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Atletico Madrid in the race for his signature.
Lampard has spoken on record about his admiration of the Uruguay international and reports suggest contact has been made.
Pundit Merson insists that Cavani would be an excellent signing for Chelsea, as he feels he’s a proven product and that he could even help current 22-year-old attacker Tammy Abraham at Stamford Bridge.
“So going forward a centre forward – they are talking about Cavani and when a player of that class and they do not come up that often, especially in January, for me I think it is an absolute must,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“And if you can get a Cavani in to teach Tammy Abraham – someone big and strong who holds the ball up, put the ball in the box and he will put his head in there. And I just think it is a no brainer.”
Cavani has five goals in just 14 PSG games this season in all competitions and is struggling to get regular minutes in a star-studded squad.
But the South American striker has a mesmerising 339 goals in 548 senior club games during his career and has been one of the best in European football for several years.
He’s a powerhouse that can lead the line well with his strength and is lethal in the air, which is why he could slot in nicely to the Chelsea attack.
Abraham has a brilliant record of 15 goals in all competitions this season, but could do with extra help in the squad and rubbing shoulders with experienced marksman Cavani could be a masterstroke.
