Martin Keown is tipping Ajax’s Edson Alvarez to be an important player for Mexico at the World Cup.

Alvarez, 25, is a talented defensive midfielder who has been linked with a move to Chelsea.

Journalist Simon Phillips claimed earlier this month that Chelsea were still interested in signing the Ajax star.

This comes after Sky Sports reported in the summer that the Blues submitted a £43million bid for Alvarez.

The Mexico international did end up staying in Amsterdam with Ajax, but links suggest he’s still an individual Chelsea reportedly want to sign and bring to Stamford Bridge.

Edson Alvarez at the World Cup

Pundit Martin Keown has been discussing every nation’s chances at the World Cup in Qatar.

Interestingly, he’s highlighted Alvarez as someone that may star for his country during the next month.

“At their heart [for Mexico] is Edson Alvarez of Ajax, a promising player who will look to dictate the play from midfield,” Keown said.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Alvarez does in Group C, where Mexico is pitted against Argentina, Poland, and Saudi Arabia.

The World Cup is a tournament where the entire footballing world watches closely, so is this the time for Ajax’s midfield enforcer to put his name up in lights?

On paper, Alvarez fits the profile of what Chelsea need in the centre of the park.

He’s an aggressive, technical and young deep-lying midfielder with Champions League experience.

The Mexican actually played in the 2018 World Cup as a right-back, but during recent years he’s settled and grown into a top-quality midfielder.
