Rennes manager Julien Stephan sys there is yet an agreement with Chelsea over Edouard Mendy’s potential transfer but he hopes the situation becomes clear soon.
It is an uncomfortable circumstance for a head coach to be waiting for a decision that could see him possibly lose a key player ahead of an important match.
Stephan has to prepare for Saturday’s Ligue 1 fixture against Monaco but cannot really include Mendy in his plan because even if the goalkeeper has returned to training, he could be a Chelsea player by then.
The young manager is aware that the two clubs are in talks and things could change in a couple of days.
He told the media in Thursday’s press conference (via L’equipe): “You know that there are discussions, we did not hide it, between the two clubs, between Edouard and Chelsea.
“For the moment, it has not yet come to [an agreement].
“I don’t know what will happen within 48 hours for his personal situation, in any case, he is physically fit to resume normal football activity.”
Stephan also said that “ideally”, he wants the final decision over the potential transfer to be made soon.
“I don’t know what will happen,” he reiterated. “If it ever happens [the Chelsea transfer], well good for him, but his behavior, there, is fantastic.”
