Report: Abramovich convinced 'ideal' 24-goal striker can help Chelsea win Premier League title

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is personally “driving” the club’s pursuit of Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku, according to Eurosport.

The 28-year-old old is reportedly one of the priority names on Chelsea’s summer shortlist, and it easy to see why.

Thomas Tuchel has done incredibly well to lead them to the Champions League glory using mostly Kai Havertz and Timo Werner as his No.9, but neither has proved to be a 30-goal-a-season striker, at least not yet.

Werner and Tammy Abraham ended the season as the club’s joint-top scorers in all competition with 12 goals apiece, while Jorginho topped their goalscoring charts in the Premier League with seven goals, all penalties.

It is obvious that Tuchel does not see Abraham as the solution to Chelsea’s goalscoring problems.

If Chelsea are to “hunt” Manchester City and compete for the Premier League title, as Tuchel previously said (via The Guardian), they might need a more consistent goal scorer.

Lukaku has been exactly that in the past couple of seasons, having scored 23 and 24 goals in Serie A in 2019/20 and 2020/21, respectively.

Abramovich reportedly personally involved in transfer pursuit of Lukaku

According to Eurosport, the most important figure at Chelsea, Abramovich, is convinced that the Belgium international is the ideal player to improve their Premier League title chances next season.

The Russian oligarch is reportedly personally involved over the plans to bring the striker back to Stamford Bridge.

Lukaku did not really have an opportunity to prove himself during his three-year spell at Chelsea.

He had two different loan spells at West Brom and Everton before joining the latter permanently in 2014.

But according to another report from the Sunday World, Abramovich has taken a liking in Lukaku and considers him as one of his favourite strikers.

Antonio Conte’s departure and Inter Milan’s financial issues could help pave the way for the potential deal, but it would not be a one-horse race, according to Eurosport.

Reported competition from Manchester City

The report claims that Manchester City have also been monitoring Lukaku.

Similar to Chelsea, Manchester City are reportedly prioritising a new No.9 this summer following Sergio Aguero’s exit. Both clubs are also looking at other options, such as Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane and Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.

That might not be the only potential obstacle for Chelsea, however.

An earlier report from Belgian outlet HLN claimed that Inter Milan are doing everything to keep the Serie A player of the season.
