Report: Atletico Madrid now battling Chelsea in race to sign £10m star this summer

Chelsea reportedly face competition from Atletico Madrid this summer in the race to sign Lens defender Jonathan Clauss.

According to GOAL, the Blues have their eyes on the 29-years-old Frenchman this summer.

It is understood that Spanish giants Atletico are now serious competition for the right wing-back’s signature, though. They want to sign a replacement for exit-bound Sime Vrsaljko.

The report explains French top-flight club Lens value Clauss at around £10million.

In addition, the France international is unwilling to extend a contract with Lens that is currently due to expire in 2023.

Clauss, who was a key player last season for a Lens side that finished seventh in Ligue 1, could be a potential bargain for as little as £10million.

The attack-minded wing-back finished the last campaign with five goals and 11 assists in 37 league appearances.

For Chelsea, they’ve got Reece James as their outstanding option in the right wing-back spot at Stamford Bridge. However, there’s going to be very little cover for him if club captain Cesar Azpilicueta leaves this summer.

It’s been reported Blues manager Thomas Tuchel is soon set for talks with versatile defender Azpilicueta about his future amid interest from Barcelona.

Chelsea supporters are intrigued to see how Tuchel builds the squad moving forward. The fact he’s targeting a specialist wing-back suggests he’s happy to continue playing with a back three next season.
