Report: Barcelona star indicates he prefers joining Chelsea over Manchester United

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has indicated that Chelsea will be his preferred destination if he is to move to the Premier League this summer, according to The Telegraph.

Despite Barcelona president Joan Laporta’s recent optimistic statement about the club’s plan to keep De Jong, The Telegraph claims that the Catalan club are still open to selling the midfielder.

The 25-year-old’s complicated contract and salary situation, in which Barcelona reportedly owe him more than £17million in wages deferred during the coronavirus pandemic, likely plays a big part.

Barcelona are reportedly willing to sell De Jong, if a compromise is reached, and any deal for the midfielder is expected to cost around £55m.

Manchester United have previously indicated that they were prepared to meet the asking price, before the move eventually came to a halt earlier in the summer.

While De Jong’s future at Barcelona remains uncertain, Chelsea then entered the race with manager Thomas Tuchel wanting the player to add competition to his midfield.

Tuchel reportedly wants De Jong to compete with his established midfield options

The Blues already have plenty of midfield options, such as N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and new youth signing Carney Chukwuemeka, but a player of De Jong’s calibre would always be a welcome addition.

Bear in mind that Kante and Jorginho are also already in the final year of their contract at the club and might need to be replaced next summer anyway.

Chelsea’s offering Champions League football arguably makes them a more attractive option than Manchester United for the Netherlands international despite the appeal of a reunion with Erik ten Hag.

The Telegraph adds that Chelsea are also in talks with Barcelona over a potential deal for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
