Report: Chelsea 'a step ahead of everybody else' in transfer race for complete 21-year-old
Chelsea are in pole position in the transfer race for AS Monaco star Aurelien Tchouameni as both the player and his agent are both aware of their long-term interest, according to London-based French journalist Julien Laurens.
As Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, and Mateo Kovacic are back in the squad, a new midfielder does not seem to be a priority for Chelsea in the January transfer window.
Still, it was not long ago Thomas Tuchel had to deal with somewhat of a crisis in midfield due to injuries and Covid-19 cases, which Chelsea will likely have to eventually prepare for again.
Bear in mind, Kante has had a poor injury record in the last few years, while Jorginho has had to play through pain and despite overload.
Tchouameni, an all-round midfielder, who seems capable of playing in both Jorginho and Kante’s roles, could be the solution.
The 21-year-old has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the last couple of years, but according to Le Parisien’s Laurens, Chelsea have kept an eye on him for much longer than that.
“Chelsea are a step ahead of everybody else,” Laurens told MAH’s YouTube channel.
“As a player and as an agent, you know some clubs have been following you for so long, longer than others.
“Even when [Tchouameni was] at Bordeaux before and not a France international or anything like this, I think that counts because Chelsea know him so well inside out and they have already made a few approaches.
“I think this is an advantage to have in a race like this when you have other big clubs like Manchester United maybe even [Manchester] City, who are also interested and have been looking at him.
“It’s good for Chelsea to be a little bit ahead of the curve.”
Laurens also mentioned Tchouameni’s desire to play in the Premier League, which would only help Chelsea’s case.
Recently, The Telegraph journalist Matt Law also highlighted the good relationship between Chelsea and Tchouameni’s agency, Excellence Sport Nation, which also represents Jules Kounde.
Although, Tchouameni is still under contract with Monaco until 2024 which means Chelsea will not only have to deal with his representatives but also the principality club.
